Welcome to the Mount Horeb Middle School website! Mount Horeb Middle School's Mission is to ensure high levels of academic and social/emotional learning for all Mount Horeb Middle School students and staff.
Mount Horeb Middle School has roughly 500 students in grades six through eight. Each grade is split into two houses. Our house system is designed to bridge the gap between elementary school and high school. Houses allow students to move between classes and teachers throughout the day, more than in a typical elementary school. Yet, it creates a community of shared students and teachers on a smaller scale than that of a typical high school schedule. Each house at Mount Horeb Middle School is made up of English/language arts, math, science, and social studies teachers as well as various applied arts teachers, based on each grade level. Placement in houses is not based on academic performance, and both grade level houses follow the same curriculum.
Not only does this approach allow students to be part of a smaller community within our building, it allows teams of teachers an opportunity to work with common students. This also allows teachers time to meet as a team and address specific student needs, whether they be academic or social.
At Mount Horeb Middle School we believe that each student should have time to explore new things and find what interests them. For this reason, we offer an exploratory rotation in both sixth and seventh grade. These rotations include: Technology Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Art, and General Music. As students move through the middle school they are then given the opportunity to learn a foreign language, well as select from a variety of applied arts courses. Additionally, music and physical education are a regular part of our students day. We have a very successful music program and offer Band, Choir, and Orchestra to all students. Unlike many middle schools, students can elect to be in all three music courses if they so choose.
We also continue to teach Positive Behavior through our PBIS system. This system mirrors what is taught at the elementary level. Our PBIS system focuses on three areas. They include being Responsible, Respectful, and Ready.
We begin each day with an advisory time known as Viking Hour. This time is structured and designed to build a positive school culture and climate, support students social and emotional needs, build rapport, and set individual student goals.
Mount Horeb Middle School is truly a special place. We have a dedicated team of teachers who work tirelessly to help nurture and grow the young minds of our students. Each of us are committed to providing a safe and positive learning environment, while helping students find success both academically and socially. I hope you find our website a useful resource. If you are in need of additional information or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact any of us here at Mount Horeb Middle School.
